Description

Article no.: ISLANDSLAV

Icelandic lichen (Cetraria islandica) is a traditionally used, natural feed ingredient for horses. It is particularly valued for its natural content of mucilage, fiber, and the lichen’s own plant compounds, and can be used as a supplemental plant-based component in a horse’s daily diet.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Icelandic lichen is its content of mucilage-forming polysaccharides. When these come into contact with water, they form a soft, gel-like structure. The lichen also contains crude fiber and structural carbohydrates, as well as naturally occurring bitter compounds and lichen acids.

Just a few tablespoons also provide a natural supplement of small amounts of minerals and other substances that occur naturally in the lichen.

Natural Plant Compounds
Icelandic lichen naturally contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals as part of its composition. Among the naturally occurring compounds is ergosterol, a compound that can act as a precursor to vitamin D when exposed to UV light.

The combined composition of plant mucilage, fiber, and natural plant compounds makes Icelandic lichen an interesting raw material for supplementing a horse’s diet with a simple, plant-based supplement.
