HORSEWARE RED LIGHT THERAPIE

Horseware LED Red Light Therapy is a modern treatment method for horses based on the use of specific wavelengths of light, mainly red light and near infrared light. Unlike Ionic Therapy, which uses the horse's own body heat, this technique adds active energy in the form of light through LED lights placed in, for example, pads, boots or blankets. The light is applied directly to the horse's body and targeted to specific areas, such as the back, legs or joints.

When the light hits the skin, it penetrates the tissue at different depths depending on the wavelength. Red light (around 660 nm) acts more superficially, affecting the skin and outer layers, while infrared light (around 850 nm) can reach deeper structures such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. When light is absorbed by cells, especially in the mitochondria (the 'powerhouses' of cells), the cells' energy production and activity are stimulated.

This process, often referred to as photobiomodulation, leads to the production of more energy in the form of ATP, which in turn can improve cell function and repair capacity. As a result, the body can work more efficiently on recovery, tissue repair and circulation.

For the horse, this has several potential physiological effects. The increased cell activity and blood circulation can help to reduce inflammation and swelling, while improving the oxygen supply to tissues. This can be particularly relevant in cases of muscle fatigue, overexertion or minor injuries. Many people therefore use red light therapy both before and after work - before to 'wake up' the muscles and after to speed up recovery.

From a health perspective, the technique is often used as an aid to rehabilitation, as it can help speed up the healing of soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. It can also have a pain-relieving effect, making the horse feel more relaxed and mobile. For older horses or individuals with stiffness, regular use can help increase comfort and mobility in everyday life.

Summary of benefits

How it works:

  • Utilizes red and infrared LED light
  • Light energy penetrates the tissue at different depths
  • Stimulates energy production by cells (mitochondria)

Effects in the body:

  • Increases cell activity and healing
  • Improves blood circulation
  • May reduce inflammation and swelling
  • Supports repair of muscles, tendons and ligaments

Benefits for the horse:

  • Faster recovery after work
  • Reduced stiffness and increased mobility
  • Can provide pain relief
  • Can be used both before and after exercise

Important to keep in mind:

  • Effect is individual
  • Requires regular use for best results
  • Should be used correctly (e.g. not in eyes or open wounds)
