Chia seeds are a 100% natural feed supplement with a high natural content of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and minerals. They are well-suited as part of a horse’s daily diet and are particularly beneficial when you want to supplement the diet with healthy fatty acids and a fiber-rich ingredient.
Chia contains very little sugar and starch but is rich in omega fatty acids and soluble fiber. This makes the seeds a practical option even in diets where you want to limit the amount of grains and starch.
Rich in omega-3
Chia is naturally very rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, and also contains omega-6 and omega-9. Omega fatty acids are a natural component of the normal structure of the skin, coat, and cell membranes, among other things, making chia a popular supplement when providing extra nutritional support for the skin, coat, and hooves.
High in Fiber and Gel-Forming
Chia is rich in soluble fiber. When the seeds come into contact with water, they form a soft, gel-like substance that binds large amounts of liquid. Its high-fiber composition therefore fits well into gentle, stomach-friendly diets and serves as a supplement when you want to focus on the texture of the feed and normal intestinal function.
Chia is also frequently used in the feeding of horses kept in sandy pastures, where a high-fiber diet is particularly important.
Protein and Amino Acids
With a protein content of approximately 21%, chia also provides protein and a broad spectrum of naturally occurring amino acids, including lysine, arginine, leucine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, and glycine. Lysine is an essential amino acid for horses and plays a role in the body’s normal development of muscles and other tissues.
Chia also naturally contains several minerals, including magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, and potassium, as well as B vitamins and other naturally occurring plant compounds.
