The drop cheek has an eggbetts ring to which the rein is attached and a small upper shank to which the side piece of the bridle is attached. As the mouthpiece cannot slide on the rings, a small, small pressure is created on the neck.
The side pieces lie flat and still against the horse's face and the mouthpiece lies very still in the mouth. The pressure is mostly on the lances. Used without a cheek chain. Also called Baucher bit. The bomber snaffle is a popular bit because the curved mouthpiece distributes pressure more evenly over the tongue and lips. It reduces the nutcracker effect and pressure on the tongue.
The upper shank is not higher than 5 cm which is the maximum according to the new TR.
