What is Selenium Yeast for Horses?

Our selenium yeast for horses is a highly absorbable organic form of selenium produced from a natural yeast strain. It has been manufactured to mimic mother nature, providing a highly available 2 mg per gram of horse selenium.

The amounts of selenium found within forage can vary, however, selenium levels are often shown as being low in our forage analysis but supplementation should be used with care as only very tiny amounts are needed in the horse’s diet.

The Precautions of Selenium Supplementation

CAUTION high levels of selenium for horses can be toxic. Either use forage analysis or check whole blood selenium before supplementation

Forageplus does not advise the feeding of separate minerals unless levels have been checked through carrying out a forage analysis.  The ratios of minerals are important and feeding one mineral without supplementing correct levels of another can be detrimental to horse health.  If you are uncertain of mineral levels then feeding either a Forageplus Equine Balancer or carrying out analysis of forage is wise.

Feed Rates

Rates for supplementation will vary according to amounts contained with grass, hay or haylage.

Lactating horses, pregnant horses, young horses and horses in moderate to heavy work will all need higher levels.

1 ml scoop = approx 0.6 grams of Selenium Yeast = approx 1.5 mg Elemental Selenium.

If feeding a 1ml scoop to an average 500kg horse this product should last you 833 days.
